Created by the Chinese IP studio StarMoly (drawn by illustrator Chaoneng), Quby originally started as a set of expressive instant-messaging stickers on apps like WhatsApp, WeChat, and LINE. Its original Chinese name translates roughly to "well-behaved baby".

The character's minimalist design allows its emotions to be easily understood at a glance. It transitions effortlessly from a chat emoji into physical merchandise, such as keychains, blind boxes, plushies, and homeware.
